Tent City commemmorative plaque dedicated

GALLATIN COUNTY - State Sen. Dale Fowler was the guest speaker recently for the 1937 Flood Refugees Tent City commemorative plaque dedication.

The event was hosted by the Gallatin County Historical Society on June 12 at the John Marshall home bank in the village of Shawneetown.

The historical society began this project over a year ago to promote and preserve the history of Gallatin County. The 1937 flood displaced numerous families for months and many lived in tents set up on higher ground. The historical society expressed its thanks and appreciation to D & R Engraving of Cave-In-Rock, The Turning Point and Shawnee Hometown Hardware in Shawneetown, Cherry Street Printing in Harrisburg, Illinois Humanities and all the people who showed up for this special event.

The John Marshall home bank Museum is open the first and third Sunday of the month, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., through the end of October. New displays have been put in place. GCHS looks forward to sharing the county's history. The museum is located on South Main Street in Old Shawneetown, Gallatin County.
