Joan Riegel, formerly of Harrisburg
Joan Riegel, age 90, of Birmingham, Alabama and formerly of Harrisburg, passed away at 9:20 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, 2019 at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham.
Joan was born on Feb. 23, 1929 in Harrisburg to the late Leslie Clarence Lightfoot and Edith (Carlyle) Whitlock. She married Wayne L. Jones on Oct. 4, 1946 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1971. She later married William Grant Riegel on April 12, 1979 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2012.
Joan worked in advertising for the Harrisburg Daily Register and served as treasurer for the city of Harrisburg. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham.
Joan is survived by her sons, Paul W. (Patricia) Jones of Naples, Florida and Dr. Larry R. (Janet) Jones of Harrisburg; daughters Connie (Robert) Moore of Birmingham and Edie (Thomas) Sparks of Kennesaw, Georgia; stepsons Lowell (Debbie) Riegel of Benton and Gary (Irma) Riegel of Oakland; nine grandchildren, Rebecca (Joel) Massey of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Marcia (Stephen) Burch of Columbia, South Carolina, Tara (John) Grosner of New York City, Dr. Loren (Karee) Jones of Austin, Texas, Dr. Braden (Dr. Courtney) Jones of Newburgh, Indiana, Rachel Moore of Birmingham, Caroline Moore of Birmingham, Matthew Sparks of Kennesaw, Georgia and Samuel Sparks of Kennesaw, Georgia; three stepgrandchildren, David Riegel, Daniel (Lailah) Riegel of Galatia, and Brant (Dr. Daniela) Riegel of St. Louis.
She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren: Lon and Carter Massey of Flowery Branch, Georgia; Taylor and Payton Burch of Columbia, South Carolina; Ingrid Grosner of New York City; Millie and Otis Jones of Austin, Texas; Thomas, Beckett and Sophie Jones of Newburgh, Indiana; and Bella and Trent Riegel of St. Louis.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Wayne L. Jones and William Grant Riegel, Joan was preceded in death by a brother, Carlyle Lightfoot.
Funeral services for Joan Riegel will begin at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Laurie Fields will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday.
