Obituary for Velma Helena Potter
VELMA HELENA POTTER, 94 of Sugar Land, Texas, formerly of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 1 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2016 at The Sycamores at Sugar Land, Sugar Land, Texas.
She was born to the late Adolph C. and Maria A. (nee Kipp) Decker on October 11, 1921 in Chester. She married Wayne W. Potter on May 19, 1949 in Jackson, Mo.; he preceded her in death on October 26, 1994.
In her early years, she worked at International Shoe Company in Chester and after marriage, she retired to raise her family and pursue a variety of volunteer interests including - Braille printing, Ladies Aid functions at her churches and support groups in her retirement communities.
In addition to living in Chester, Velma lived in St. Louis, Mo.; O'Fallon, Mo.; Alvin, Texas; Burfordville, Mo.; Brenham, Texas and Sugar Land, Texas.
Velma loved to travel with her family. Together, they explored each of the 50 states, Canada and Mexico, and cruised to Alaska and the Caribbean.
She spent many hours with her embroidery and quilting. Velma enjoyed card games of all sorts, many crafts, keeping in contact with family and friends on her computer, and collecting thimbles and stamp.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church while residing in Chester and Fishers of Men Lutheran Church during her time Sugar Land.
Survivors - 1 Son: Michael (Evelyn) Potter, Sugar Land, TX; 1 Daughter: Kathryn (Bruce) Lacaillade, Pembroke, NH; 4 Grandchildren: Christopher (Amy) Lacaillade, Bow, NH, Kailey (James) Woodbury, Pembroke, NH, Steven Potter, Sugar Land, TX, Thomas Potter, Sugar Land, TX; 1 Great-Grandchild: Quinn Lacaillade.
Preceded in death by: Parents, Husband, 9 Brothers - Alfred, William, George, Adolph, Harvey, Edward, Vernon, Earl and Kenneth Decker and 1 Sister - Mildred Siemers.
Funeral Service was held Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, Illinois with Rev. Tim Landskroener officiating.
Interment is in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Chester. Memorials can be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Chester.
