Division and North now a full four-way stop

The intersection of Division and North streets in Du Quoin is now a full four-way stop, instead of the two-way stop that was there before.

An additional two stop signs have been installed facing Division Street.

The police, however, are giving drivers time to get used to the new stop signs before they start writing tickets, the Du Quoin City Council heard Monday night.

According to Mayor Guy Alongi, the new signs were installed at the request of homeowners in the area.

"People in the neighborhood were complaining about people driving through there like crazy," Alongi said.

The ordinance calling for the new stop signs was passed by the council on Monday evening, even though the signs already had been installed, to give people time to see them.

Baxter named city zoning administrator

Du Quoin Deputy Police Chief Howard Baxter will take on the additional role of Zoning Administrator for the city of Du Quoin, the city council approved Monday. Jeff Ashauer, Du Quoin's economic development adviser, said Baxter has been in training for more than two months. Ashauer said he will be Baxter's backup. The deputy chief will not receive extra pay at this point for the work, said Mayor Guy Alongi.
