Hundreds of pink ribbons are being hung throughout Pinckneyville in support of the Pinckneyville bid for the new 1,800-inmate medium security prison. Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Pyatt has helped to organize the "Putting on the Pink" ribbon campaign to show how much the area backs Pinckneyville being selected as one of the finalist locations ... Mr. and Mrs. James E. Dunn will celebrate their 50th anniversary at a reception given by their children, Steven and Fran Dunn and Nancy and Fred Starkweather at the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. Jim and Betty were united in marriage on Oct. 19, 1945, at the Sesser Baptist Church by her father, Rev. D.H. Smith ... Alexis Denae Korbar is proud to announce the birth of her baby sister, Mallory Allyn, born on Sept. 20, 1995. Along with Alexis, Mallory was welcomed home by her parents, Todd and Angie Korbar.

A bassinet shower was held for Claudia Graul in the Sunfield Methodist Church. Hostesses were Lee Wilson and Patty Jackson. The decorative theme was centered around a yellow bear and a bear-shaped cake was served along with punch to those present ... Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Cook, 32 S. Ballentine, have returned from Indianapolis, Indiana, where they visited over the weekend with their son, Charles E. Cook, who had flown from Mesa, Arizona, to conduct a week's revival at the Ben Davison Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Miss Susan Hirsch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hirsch Sr., of Route 2 in Du Quoin and Ralph Crain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Crain of Du Quoin were united in marriage Saturday morning, Oct. 6, at the Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Rev. John Mauthe performed the single ring ceremony. The bridegroom was recently discharged from the service, after serving 40 months overseas. He is employed at the Hall Chevrolet Company ... An announcement has been made by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Manzo of the approaching marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth, to Oland E. Johnson Jr. of the U.S. Naval Reserve. Miss Manzo attended the Du Quoin Township High School and graduated from St. Johns School of Nursing this year. Her parents recently moved from Du Quoin to reside in Normandy, Missouri.

William T. Mercer of Pinckneyville, who is well known in typographical circles throughout the Midwest, was a visitor at the Call office today. Several years ago he worked on the Dayton News for "Jimmie" Cox and also on the Marion Star, Sen. Harding's paper. He says as far as the men, personally are concerned, it is a 50-50 proposition. Mr. Mercer is the son-in-law of Mrs. Thomas Campbell of Pinckneyville, a former resident of Du Quoin ... Miss Minnie Schmitt, who has a position as stenographer in the offices of the Murphysboro Silica Co., spent Sunday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schmitt, in this city. Her oldest brother, Henry Schmitt, is now located in Murphysboro and is employed at a machine shop there.

The faith has lasted just as long as the original logs and hand-hewn beams at the Friendship Church of Christ in Tamaroa. Both have endured 125 years and will be celebrating the anniversary with a special service and basket dinner on Oct. 22 ... Du Quoin High School band director Robert Evans received confirmation from Bonnie Wheeler of ABC affiliate WSIL-TV Channel 3 that the Marching Indians' performance will aired nationally during the historic 20th anniversary show of ABC's Good Morning America. The spot will air sometime between 7 and 9 a.m. on Nov. 6 ... Dan Eaves introduced his guests, Bud Shook and Harold Emling, at the weekly meeting of the Du Quoin Rotary Club. Shook and Emling have ownership interest in Access U.S., a computer subscription service. The presentation about the internet proved to be very interesting, since about half of the Rotarians present admitted to being computer illiterate.

Mrs. Sharon Baxter, niece of Miss Perriel Baxter and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Baxter, is on an extended tour of Europe and Asia. A former resident, she is making the trip with her fiancee, Billy Martin of New York City and his theatrical troupe, and confided to her aunt that she was just a little "skittish" about the Iron Curtain. After returning to the United States, she plans to visit here a few days with her aunt, Miss Baxter, of 32 S. Wells Street ... Miss Tina Wiseleder and Mrs. Josephine Oestricher spent the weekend in Murphysboro visiting Mrs. Kate Schock.

Mrs. Pauline Haynes left for Chicago where she will join her husband, Cpl. W. Haynes, who will receive his discharge from Fort Sheridan soon. Cpl. Haynes has been in the service two years and spent 20 months of this time overseas. Mrs. Haynes resigned her position at the Marshall Browning Hospital two weeks ago and has been residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hanlin, East Park Street. The couple will return to Du Quoin after a short visit in Chicago ... Four Perry County men, James M. Troutt and Orville D. Furlow of Du Quoin, and Roy A. Hardin and William C. Chapman, both of Pinckneyville, have enlisted in the peacetime U.S. Navy, according to a news release from the Recruiting Office in Marion.

Thomas Wilson, for many years a resident of St. John, has purchased the Winters' cottage on East North Street, now occupied by Shalon Anderson and family. With his wife, he will shortly move to that property. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson are among the oldest and most highly respected citizens of our neighbor village and are coming to Du Quoin to be near their daughters, Mrs. J.J. Boeheim and Mrs. Thomas Jones and son, N.C. Stacy.
