James Frederick Moore of Carrier Mills

James Frederick Moore, 97, passed away on July 18, 2020 in Carrier Mills. He was born on March 2, 1923 in Cairo, to Frank and Myrtle (Ray) Moore.

He married Margaret Louise (Shelton) Moore in New Orleans on Oct. 28, 1944 at the Church of Christ, at 7th and Camp streets, by Pastor Frank Mc Mullins. Together they shared 70-plus wonderful years. They had and enjoyed a great journey of their achievements.

They are proudest of their children, Forrest, Marsha and Cheryl, for just being outstanding, self-supporting American citizens.

Fred graduated from Cairo High School. He had a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps at Kings Point, New York. He also had Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees from SIU Carbondale.

He retired from the Office of Student Work and Financial Assistance at SIU Carbondale.

He and Margaret, with grandchildren and elderly parents, traveled all 50 states, all provinces of Canada, most Mexican states, Europe, China, Russia, India, Australia, South America, the Fiji Islands and the Panama Canal.

Fred was a member of the Church of Christ in Cairo and a member of the Master, Mates and Pilots Union in New Orleans. His DD214 credits him 3,900 hours of continuous sea duty. He was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran. His area of service included the following theaters: North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and North Africa, South Pacific, China-Burma-India area and the North Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Moore, as well as his half-brother, Larry Jefferies and half-sister, Louise Jefferies.

Interment will take place at Mound City National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elementary Media Centers in Harrisburg, Illinois, in care of the school principal or superintendent.
