Joan Laverne 'Joanie' Drake Oldham

Joan Laverne "Joanie" Drake Oldham, 87, of Shawneetown, passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 1, 2020.

She was born on April 22, 1932 in East St. Louis, the youngest of nine children born to the late Roy and Pansie Agnes (Moore) Drake. Joan married Clarence I. Oldham on Nov. 9, 1949 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 2017. They were married for almost 68 years at the time of his death.

Joanie was a licensed cosmetologist, having a shop in Shawneetown at one time. She was also a longtime faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shawneetown and was active in the Shawneetown Booster Club for many years, as well as the local Order of the Eastern Star.

Joan is survived by her loving family: her son, C.I. and Lou Oldham of Shawneetown and her daughter, Sally Jo and Rich Hyatt of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Christy (Scott) Scherrer, Joel Oldham of Shawneetown and Robbie, Bryan, and Emily Hyatt of Indianapolis; five great-grandchildren, Hank (Kelsea) Oldham, Meghan and Gracie Oldham and Drake and Hunter Scherrer, all of Shawneetown; one great-great-grandson, Joseph Gentry Oldham of Shawneetown; and two sisters, Norma Johnson of Sun Lakes, Arizona and Kathryn Gill of Encinitas, California. She will also be missed by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joanie is also survived by her devoted caregivers, Mary Jo Reddick and Stella Feazel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Everett, Bertis, and Max Drake; and three sisters, Iva Carrigan, Margaret Lynch, and Iris Smock.

Visitation for Joanie will be held from 10 a.m. until service time at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. Pastor Jack Hall will officiate the service and burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown.

Donations in Joanie's memory may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Shawneetown First Presbyterian Church.
