Statement from Rosalind Joseph, director of track & field and cross country, at SIU

As a program, Saluki Track and Field & Cross Country stands with our black and brown communities. We will not tolerate, condone, ignore or appease hate. We will stand in support of our students, fans, alumni, coaches and staff and their rights, both civil and equal, as we all work to enact justice in this world. We will work with and for advocates of change and we will commit to educating and communicating with those that may not understand, or even agree, with our views of tolerance. There is a proud and rich history of racial diversity and inclusion at SIU. Black lives matter here. But our goal is to spread the message and live the message, everyday.

These are tough times in our country. Anger and heartbreak are rising. People are hurting and communities are reeling. As a black woman, I am personally and deeply affected. I not only see the divide, but I feel it as well. I not only hear you and stand with you- I am you.

But I can still commit to doing my part. We can all be better because there is so much work still left to do. As a coach to a diverse team, I stay hopeful and encouraged by and for the young people I serve. It's not just about one of us, it's about all of us. My family and your family deserve a world where we give and receive respect, justice and civility, equally.
