Danny D. James of Chester

Danny D. James, 87, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 12:43 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at his residence.

He was born to the late Austin G. and Violet M. (nee Dorway) James on June 11, 1932 in Chester.

Danny married June A. Hohgrefe on Sept. 25, 1954 in Bremen, Illinois; she survives.

Danny served in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the infantry and in counterintelligence for 26 years. He did one tour in Korea, two tours in Vietnam and one tour in Okinawa, and debriefed Vietnam prisoners of war.

He then went to work for the Department of Corrections for over 15 years.

Danny was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, V.F.W. Post #3553 in Chester, American Legion Post # 487 in Chester, and the Chester Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife June James of Chester; six children, Danny (Amy) James Jr. of Corydon, Indiana, Linda (Allen) Gibbs of Chester, Cindy (Marty) Weaver of Maryland Heights, Missouri, Toni Moore of Sneeds Ferry, North Carolina, Teri (Kevin) Thurau of St. Peters, Missouri and Jane (Bill) Gautier of Chattanooga, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Stephen James; and three sisters, Shirley Berridge, Beverly Headley and Betty Jane Hughes.

The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Pechacek Funeral Homes, in Chester, with the Rev. Justin Massey officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service, at Pechacek Funeral Homes, Chester.

Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran School.
