Otis Ray Farthing of Carrier Mills
Otis Ray Farthing, age 84, and a resident of Carrier Mills, passed away at 6:17 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018 in the VA Medical Center Community Living Center surrounded by his family.
Otis was born in Carrier Mills on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1934, to Otis R. Farthing and Anna L. McGuire.
He graduated from Carrier Mills High School and married the former Sharon Schwartz on Sept. 13, 1954. They celebrated their 64th anniversary together in the VA Hospital Community Living Center.
Otis worked at several banks in the area, with the last being the Egyptian State Bank in Carrier Mills. He also sold insurance for several years.
He was a member of the Carrier Mills First United Methodist Church and the Marion Oshel American Legion Post 364 of Carrier Mills.
Otis is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Linda (Dan) Ellis of Marion and Julie Farthing of Metropolis; one son, David (Kim) Farthing of Marion; four grandchildren, Kara (Aaron) Baker of Biloxi, Mississippi, Kristin (Thadchai) Sattayatam of Bolingbrook, Ashley Farthing and Aaron (fiancee Kalli Dover) Farthing; great-grandchildren Ava and Ben Sattayatam, and Samuel and Zachery Baker; one brother, Paul (Marilyn) Farthing of Johnston City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Albert Crook.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018 in the First United Methodist Church in Carrier Mills. His pastor, the Rev. Todd Krost, will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, and at noon on Sunday at the church.
Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery, with military rites by the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legions and the U.S. Army flag ritual team.
Memorials in lieu of flowers should be directed to the VA Community Living Center or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
