Peggy Ann Pitman of Du Quoin and Tamaroa
Peggy Ann Pitman, 79, of Du Quoin/Tamaroa, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020 at the home of her daughter in Casselberry, Florida. Her daughter and son-in-law have been caring for her for the past year and a half.
Peggy was born on Feb. 20, 1941 in Hartford, Michigan, the daughter of the late William Earl and Frances E. (Barnhart) Nickens. Peggy was the stepdaughter of Clay W. Ashbrook.
Peggy worked as an activities director at Gold Plate in Du Quoin for more than 20 years. She loved and cared for the people there.
In 1957 she married Eugene D. Burdel of Du Quoin, the father of her children. She remarried in 1971 to David G. Glasscock of Du Quoin.
On May 9, 1981 she and Charles H. Pitman were wed. The marriage ended, but their partnership and family remained intact. She lived with Charles in Tamaroa until her health forced her to move to Florida.
Besides Charles, she is survived by her daughter, Tina Jo (Steve) Wozneski of Casselberry, Florida; her son, Donald Eugene Burdel (Beth Ann Adkins) of Willisville, Illinois; stepson Curtis Pitman, stepdaughter Lynette Pitman and stepdaughter-in-law Cindy Pitman, all of Tamaroa; one brother, Harold Louis Nickens of Jacksonville, Oregon; three grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather; two spouses; two infant daughters who died at birth, Angela and Belinda Sue Burdel; one son, William Joseph "Billy" Burdel; one brother, Earl Eugene Nickens; a stepson, Chuck Pitman; step-daughter-in-law Carolyn Pitman; and step-granddaughter Miranda Pitman.
The family would like to recognize Carolyn Pitman for her love and kindness shown to Peggy.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan allows up to 50 attendees, all practicing social distancing and all wearing masks.
A private Mass was officiated in Florida by her grandson, Father Joshua Swallows, prior to bringing her home to Illinois.
Private family graveside services will be held at the Antioch Cemetery at Tamaroa.
Friends are invited to make memorials to the Antioch Cemetery, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
