Fencing project around veterans memorial proceeds quickly
The black wrought iron has enclosed the Du Quoin Veterans Memorial in Keyes Park most of the way around. But while it looks almost finished, Mayor Guy Alongi says there is still a lot to do.
He said the fundraising for the project is still in need of another $10,000, which Eagle Scout candidate Thomas Brantley is working on.
Brantley was the original impetus behind the fencing project - as a way to protect the monument from accidents and vandalism. The city has embraced the project enthusiastically and donated the first $5,000.
Alongi said he's heard from people who think they won't be able to get close to the memorial any longer. He assured residents that is not the case.
"The gate will be unlocked most of the time," Alongi said. "We're just trying to deter people from walking on the memorial or hitting it with skateboards."
On Friday, the fencing project was about 75% complete. The mayor said what with the fundraising going on and they fact they want to do more work on the "dome," it will probably be spring before there is a formal dedication.
