One teen killed, one hospitalized after accident on Sunday afternoon
A 14-year-old Cutler girl was killed and a 15-year-old Coulterville girl was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Sunday afternoon after their vehicle overturned on Moffet Road near Valley Steel Road in Randolph County.
A 5-year-old girl who was also in the car was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Illinois State Police.
State police said in a news release that the three girls were eastbound on Moffet Road in a Chevrolet SUV. According to the preliminary investigation, at about 1:20 p.m. the 15-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle over gravel, and the SUV left the roadway to the left and overturned.
Police say the driver was ejected from the SUV and the 14-year-old front seat passenger was partially ejected. The 14-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 5-year-old girl was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The young driver has been cited for not having a valid driver's license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, operating an uninsured vehicle, failure to wear a seat belt and failure to secure a child in a child restraint.
Police said the crash remains under investigation. It is not known how fast the SUV was traveling when the accident occurred.
No further updates on the condition of the 15-year-old are available at this time.
