Chester man dies in Steeleville crash

Alfred L. Poppen Jr., 36, of Chester died Friday, Oct. 23, after a one-car crash on Wine Hill Road at Ballpark Road in Steeleville, according to the Randolph County Coroner's Office.

Poppen was a passenger in a 2014 Ford Mustang driven by Sarah Brannon, 39, of Carbondale, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead at Sparta Community Hospital.

Brannon was taken to Chester Memorial Hospital, and was ticketed with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage, according to the police report.
