Melba Jean Campbell of Cutler

Melba Jean Campbell, 88, of Cutler, passed away at 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 in the Pinckneyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Jean was born on Sept. 1, 1930 in Perry County, a daughter to Erle and Grace (Bigham) Hallbauer. On June 16, 1954, she married Russell Dean "Bud" Campbell in Germany. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage together. She taught in a one-room school, Union School, and was the last living teacher from that school.

Later in life, she worked for nearly 20 years as a teacher's aide at Pinckneyville Elementary School District #50. Jean was a member of Denmark Baptist Church in Denmark, IL and of the Gold Wing Road Rider's Association. The Campbells enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, riding their motorcycle and going dancing. Jean loved reading, gardening, sewing, embroidery and making her own clothes. She also loved spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Nyra Campbell (Darrin Aubuchon) of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Keith (Crystal) Campbell of Pinckneyville, and Dwayne Campbell of Cutler; two sisters, Helen Smith of Pinckneyville, and Fern Shannon of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Leah Campbell (Garrett Callender) of Nashville, TN, Ashley Campbell (Kevin Patton) of Benton, and Steven Campbell (Angelina Mabrey) of Du Quoin; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and more recently her husband, Russell Dean "Bud" Campbell, on Dec. 25, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26 at Denmark Baptist Church with Jeff Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Cottom Cemetery, Denmark.

Visitation will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Friday at Denmark Baptist Church from 9 until 11 a.m.
