Roger L. Petrowske of Chester

Roger L. Petrowske, 92, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 7:04 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.

He was born to the late Herman and Florence (nee Singer) Petrowske on February 16, 1928 in Chester, Illinois

Roger married Ruth Stumpe on April 22, 1950 at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Chester, Illinois; she survives.

He was a Navy Veteran and served his country from Jan. 23, 1946 to Nov. 24, 1947. He was stationed in Tsingtao, China.

Roger retired Jan. 1, 1991 from Menard Correctional Center where he had worked as a correctional officer for twenty years. Prior to his employment for the State of Illinois, he was employed as an auto body repairman and worked many years at Mel and Rocky's in Chester.

Roger loved his family, his cars, working in his yard, traveling and loved to talk. He was known by just about everyone in Chester as a kind and friendly man. In his 92 years, he touched the lives and hearts of many people. He enjoyed telling his childhood stories to his family and they were loved by all generations. Roger is greatly loved by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed so very much.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Chester, three children, Donna Eggemeyer, Mary (Dave) Verseman, and Nancy (Mitch) Eggemeyer, all of Chester, a daughter-in-law, Ginny Petrowske, a sister, Genevieve Tindall, of Murphysboro, a brother-in-law, Norbert P. (Mary Ann) Simpson, sister-in-law Sarah Stumpe, seven grandchildren, Melissa (Tad) Middleton, Michele (Todd) Grohmann, Chelsie (Tyler) Halterman, Kristen Eggemeyer, Erin Eggemeyer and Lee Petrowske, seven great grandchildren, Blake, Drew & Chase Grohmann, Ella & Camden Middleton and Nash Brian & Layne Daniel Halterman, as well as many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Katheryn Petrowske, a son, Brian Petrowske, a broth, Delmar Petrowske, who gave his life in the Korean War, brothers-in-law Roger, Roland, and Alan Stumpe, and Jerry Tindall, sister-in-law Dorothy Stumpe, two sons-in-law, Gary Eggemeyer and Bruce Wise, and a nephew, Jason Stumpe.

A private funeral Mass will be held at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with Rev. Eugene H. Vojcik, V.F., officiating.

There will be a public visitation at the church on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Chester.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the church is limited to 50 people at a time. It is requested that everyone wears a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Memorial may be made to Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Chester, St. Mary's Catholic School, in Chester, or Masses.
