CHS golf: Lady Jackets are 5-2; Yellow Jackets are 6-2 as season moves into Week 3

Both Chester High School golf teams continued to improve in Week 2 of competition. The Lady Jackets went 3-1 for the week with wins over Marissa, Sparta and Steeleville and a loss to Trico to improve to 5-2 overall.

The Yellow Jacket boys were 6-2 for season, after beating Marissa and New Athens, but falling to Gibault for the second time in two weeks.

On a hot, humid Aug. 25 the girls hosted Marissa and Trico at the Chester Country Club, where the Lady Pioneers edged the Lady Jackets 196-207 to win the match. The Jackets, however, picked up a win over Marissa, 207-255.

Chester's Camryn Luthy won low medalist for the second time in two weeks, leading the CHS girls with a score of 45 (+9), followed by Jazzi Meredith 53 (+17) a personal-best, Paige Vasquez 53 a personal-best (+17), Sam Eggemeyer 56 (+20), Lauryn Soellner 60 (+24), and Aubrie Medford 63 (+27).

JV players included Maleia Absher who shot a personal best of 61 on her birthday; Kailyn Absher who shot 63, and Rylie McDonough who shot 72. Trico was led by Kylie Bunselmeyer and Saylor Griffiths who each shot 46, just one stroke behind medalist Camryn Luthy. They were followed by Kayla Bunselmeyer 50, Kayla Knott 54, Megan Wettig 55, and Ellyse Blazier 73.

Marissa was led by Olivia Quigley who shot 27 followed by Ellie Parker 61, Olivia Parker 73, and Josie Stephens 74.

Paul Zemlyn, Assistant Coach said, "These girls are young and they look up to the three upper classmen. They are all improving and will be ready when it really counts."

Girls beat Steeleville and Sparta: The Lady Jackets bested both Steeleville and Sparta on Aug. 28 at the Chester Country Club. Luthy, a freshman, earned the medalist honors again for the third time in five matches with her low score of 45 (+9). Paige Vasquez was Chester's second scorer with a round of 46 (+10). It was Vasquez's second personal-best in-a-row as she improved by seven strokes over her Tuesday score of 53.

According to Zemlyn, Vasquez nearly shot a hole-in-one on hole No. 5, when her tee shot landed about 3 feet in front of the cup. Zemlyn attributes her improvement to a "new swing" in which she has been working.

Sam Eggemeyer shot 52 (+16), an improvement of four strokes; Jazzi Meredith shot 60 (+24); Lauryn Soellner shot 63 (+27); and Aubrie Medford shot 66 (+30). The Lady Jackets shot a seasonal team low with their score of 203 to defeat Steeleville 237 and Sparta 245.

The Lady Jackets will be at White Oaks Country Club in Marissa on Sept. 1 to play Marissa, Red Bud and Valmeyer. On Sept. 2 they go to the Nashville Municipal Golf Course to face Nashville, Christ Our Rock Lutheran and Okawville.
