GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL: Tough Monday's for DHS, Elverado
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Undefeated Herrin shook off a slow start and rolled to its 14th consecutive win Monday, handling Du Quoin 66-24 in Anders Memorial Gymnasium.
The Lady Indians, 1-11, have now lost 11 consecutive games and entertain a strong Sparta team Tuesday night.
Herrin led just 8-4 until the final two minutes of the opening frame, mounting an 8-0 run that set the tone for a 19-3 second quarter advantage.
The Lady Tigers were in front 35-7 at halftime.
Ka'Daizah Benjamin scored a game-high 16 points with Austyn Ridings scoring12 and Diamond Timmons nine.
Du Quoin's top scorer was freshman guard Michaela Brown, who finished with nine points.
No other player managed more than four points.
Z-R-C 69, Elverado 39
At Elkville Monday, Lauren Mitchell poured in 33 points to lift visiting Zeigler-Royalton/Christopher to victory.
The loss was the 10th straight for the Lady Falcons, 1-11, who play Cairo at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Chester's Mid-Winter Classic.
The Lady Falcons will play three games in the tournament.
Mitchell and Z-R-C raced ahead 23-4 after one quarter and busted things wide open with a 30-7 third quarter edge.
Sami Hicks and Mallory Winthrop each scored 10 points for EHS.
