Last Saturday, more than 50 SIU students got up early and did their part to keep Carbondale beautiful. The event was the bi-annual city/park joint clean-up by the groups Green Earth and Keep Carbondale Beautiful. The volunteers met at the Attucks Park Pavilion for a short orientation at 9 a.m. Then, some of the volunteers went off into the woods to pick-up in Green Earth’s Pyles Fork Preserve, and others picked-up around the park. The majority of the volunteers divided into teams and fanned out into Carbondale to pick up trash. Groups participating included the National Black Law Students Association, National Society of Black Engineers, Saluki Entrepreneur Corps, SIU Black Men’s Coalition, and fraternity and sorority members representing SIU’s Pan-Hellenic Council.
