Charles Marion Griswold of Broughton, formerly of McLeansboro

Charles Marion Griswold, 89, of Broughton, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022 at his residence.

Charles was born on July 30, 1933 in McLeansboro, Illinois. He was the son of Jewel and Mary (Cantrell) Griswold. Charles married Esther Marie Essary on Dec. 31, 1952 in Bluford, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years; a daughter, MaDonna Joan Griswold of Temple, Texas; a son, Robert Vernon Griswold, of San Angelo, Texas; four grandchildren, Carrie (Matthew) Wiggins of Eldorado, Illinois, Steve Cordell of Marion, Kentucky, Kelly (Ryan) Schable of Kirkland, Washington and Melissa (John) John Potts of Montgomery, Indiana; seven great-grandchildren, Dillon Wiggins, Lillian Potts, Braden Wiggins, Reeve Potts, Liam Wiggins, Hannah Schable and Ethan Schable; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Mary (Cantrell) Griswold; and two sisters, Helen (Griswold) Starr of Phoenix, Arizona and Alice (Griswold) Tedford of McLeansboro, Illinois.

Charles graduated from McLeansboro High School in 1952. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 during the Korean War, and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he served as an Equipment Engineer at the Ladd Army Airfield. Charles earned the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1956. He worked for Scot Lad Foods/Roundy's for over 30 years as a mechanic before retiring.

Funeral services for Charles Marion Griswold will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022 at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Gene Garrison officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022 at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral services at New Hickory Hill Cemetery near Broughton, with military rites provided by the Marion, Illinois National Guard Honors Team and Eldorado V.F.W. Post 3479.
