Solar energy panel to be held at civic center on Jan. 17
A presentation on rooftop and community solar energy options in southern Illinois has been slated for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Carbondale Civic Center.
The event is sponsored by the Shawnee Group Sierra Club and the Carbondale Community Solar Working Group. Panelists include Rebecca Judd, Sierra Club Illinois clean energy advocate; Scott Allen, environmental outreach for the Citizens Utility Board; and Brent Ritzel, co-chair of the Illinois Solar Energy Association Committee on Rural Electric Co-ops and Municipal Electric Utilities.

MLK Community Celebration coming up
The 20th-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Community Celebration will be held starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Carbondale Civic Center.
Doors will open at 3 p.m. for light refreshments and viewing of community organizations' information tables. The theme for this year's celebration is "A Voice for Freedom and Justice."
The Carbondale Middle School Jazz Band will perform under direction of Shadi Frick. Other musical performances will include a choir from the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale under the direction of Ann Marie Schmidt. Delores Isaac from Marion will be the featured soloist for "If I Can Help Somebody."
The Spirit of Dr. King Community Service Award will be presented to this year's recipient by Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry and Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens. Everyone is encouraged to bring canned or boxed food donations for the local food pantries.
Six to compete at BGCC Youth of the Year Dinner
The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale will hold its fourth-annual Youth of the Year Celebration Dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 at SIU Student Center Ballroom B.
Two high school students, Miles Showalter and Ja'Riah Coleman, will compete for the Youth of the Year title. The winner will compete at the state competition April 9 and 10 in Springfield. The winner also will receive a college scholarship.
Four youth, Knowledge Gayles, Ethan Reuter, Abigail Fields and Cordell Cady, are competing for the Junior Youth of the Year award.
Finalists for the competition each wrote three essays, and each will be giving a speech after the dinner that incorporates the content of these essays. Judges also will ask each candidate two questions. Both the Junior and Senior Youth of the Year winners will be the 2019 ambassadors for the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale.
This year, the event will feature guest speaker and SIU assistant basketball coach Anthony Beane Sr.

AAUW to award three scholarships
The American Association of University, Carbondale Branch is offering three scholarships to women enrolled at SIU Carbondale.
The awards will be applied to the students' SIUC Bursar accounts for the school year beginning July 1, 2019. Preference for these awards will be given to students from the local area. The postmarked deadline is Feb. 14, 2019.
First, a $500 scholarship will go to a woman currently enrolled at SIUC and continuing or entering any field of graduate education in the graduate school or a program of professional education in law or medicine.
A second $500 scholarship, the Joyce A. Kelly Memorial Scholarship, is offered to a current, non-traditional female SIUC student. The late Joyce A. Kelley achieved her educational goals later in life while, as a single mother, raising her family.
An undergraduate scholarship, the Lelia Marvin AAUW Scholarship of $500, will be awarded to a female John A. Logan College student completing an associate degree and enrolling at SIUC fall semester 2019.
To apply, students must submit a letter which includes information on their current and planned enrollment status, major, scholastic and community achievement, connections relating to the local area, financial status relating to attending school, Dawg tag number, three contact references and a statement of professional goals. Also, applicants should attach a current resume and transcript.
