Bernard O. Schneider

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Bernard O. "Barney" Schneider, age 89, of Du Quoin passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Fairview Nursing Home in Du Quoin.

Barney was born on June 15, 1918, in Du Quoin, a son to Oscar and Elizabeth (Hemmer) Schneider. On Aug. 31, 1939, he married Mildred L. Ivester in Du Quoin and she survives. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, served as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, and was employed as a coal miner for 41 years at Kathleen Mine, Truex Mine, Freeman #3, and United Electric Mine. He was a member of UMWA and a former member of the Elks of Benton and DuQuoin. Barney was a master of the building trade, having designed and built five homes over his lifetime. He took great pride in seeing the job well done.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Schneider of Du Quoin; a son, Jerry (Penny) Schneider of Edmond, Okla.; five grandchildren, Renee Ann (Tim) Burdel of Tamaroa, Janie Lee (Buddy) Shute of Pinckneyville, Tanya (Ken) Adamson of Seattle, Wash., Casey Walling of Tampa, Fla., and January Schneider of Edmond, Okla.; three great-grandchldren, Tiara Adamson, Kenan Adamson, and Madison Walling' a sister-in-law, Maxine Geistdorfer; a brother-in-law, Richard Ivester; a special nephew, Gary (Jean) Pyle and a nephew, Kevin Pyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rick Schneider; and a sister, Wilma Messick.

Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, with Father Harry Jerome officiating. Interment will be in Elkville Cemetery.

Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home in Du Quoin on Thursday morning from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
