Hundreds enjoy Harrisburg July 4 celebration

HARRISBURG - Hundreds of people flocked to the north side of Harrisburg Sunday night to enjoy the city's Independence Day celebration.

At the city's property on the north end of Veterans Drive, local gospel music artists The Peyton Sisters performed a concert sponsored by the Saline Baptist Association.

The musicians, Rachael and Riley Peyton, offered testimony to the crowd in between songs. In May, the duo was nominated in the Top Five Singing News Fan Awards for Duet of the Year.

The celebration also featured food trucks, and cars lined both sides of the north side of Veterans Drive, in addition to parking in the open area adjacent to the concert.

Children could be seen playing and waving lighted sparklers in the air.

As the summer sky darkened, a multitude of smaller fireworks displays could be seen prior to the city's fireworks show from the Saline County Fairgrounds, not quite a mile away. Once Harrisburg's fireworks started, crowds seated in lawn chairs and on the tailgates of pickups applauded and cheered the various displays.
