He lived in Du Quoin beginning about 1919 on North Division Street having moved from Old Du Quoin. He was the son of Charles T. Harrison and Sarah M. Neville, both of Du Quoin. He had one older sister and three younger sisters, all deceased.
He married the former Dorothy Stanton of Pinckneyville, Illinois in 1936. They had two daughters, Pat Oppenheim of Leesburg, Indiana (deceased) and Jo Satterfield; two granddaughters, Wendy Satterfield Stewart of Indialantic, Florida and Amy Satterfield Bryant of Alexandria, Virginia and two great grandchildren, Sarah and Zachary Stewart, of the home.
Leslie worked in various jobs starting early in his life. He worked in Kroger Stores starting while in high school and later managing a store in Elkville,Illinois and then in Du Quoin. After declining a larger Kroger store assignment far from Du Quoin in the late 1940's, he owned and operated a Standard Oil Station and garage into the early 1950's. He was very active in the Lion's Club and the Boy Scouts.
He went from the Standard Oil station to E.T. Simonds Construction Co. working on many major highway and bridge projects in southern Illinois as well as the Du Quoin High School. Due to the seasonal nature of construction work, he went to work for General Motors in St. Louis. After Pat graduated from Du Quoin High School in 1958 the family moved to Collinsville, Illinois.
Leslie retired from General Motors in 1973. He and Dorothy moved to western Kentucky where he grew vegetable gardens much appreciated by many beneficiaries. During the years growing up and continuing until after his retirement, Leslie relished hunting in southern Illinois. A favored place for hunting ducks and squirrels was the Big Pond where he owned a rustic log cabin for many years.
After his beloved wife Dorothy passed away in December 1996, after more than 60 years of marriage, Leslie moved to northern Indiana where he resided with his daughter Pat until her death in February of this year. He had again established a reputation for having great gardens. After Pat's death he moved to Virginia to live with his daughter Jo and her husband Steve.
A funeral service was held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Du Quoin, Illinois on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Max Rixman and Rev. Rob Rixman officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin, Illinois.
