William Francis Steffers, Navy Chief (Retired)
William Francis Steffers, Navy Chief (Retired), passed from this world on Sept. 4, 2012 in Atlanta, Ga. to be reunited with the love of his life, Ruth Lenore Davies Steffers.
Bill was born Jan. 17, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio. He was the son of Mathias Richard Steffers and Rose Higgins Corning. He had two brothers, Norman and Gerald and two sisters, Lillian Steffers Evans and Beulah Steffers Black, all of whom has passed before him.
He and Ruth had six sons, Frederick, Michael, Roger, Danny, Robert (Bobby) and Alan. His daughters-in-law are Susan, Sue, Beverly, Val, Debbie, Betty and Connie. There are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He served his country during WWII, Korean War and the Viet Nam War. After retiring from the service, Bill relocated to Du Quoin, Ill. There he was active with the VFW and Senior Citizen Center. He loved to dance. There were never any "wallflowers" when he was at the dance. He also enjoyed fishing and calling numbers for Bingo games.
Bill was an avid horseshoes player. He would play for beer and money and, more often than not, win. The same can be said for his card playing.
Bill made scores of friends and truly enjoyed his life. He will be missed deeply.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Roswell Funeral Home in Roswell, Ga.
Visitation was Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
