Edna Ruth Carter of Johnston City
JOHNSTON CITY - Edna Ruth Carter, 84, passed away at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, in her family home.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Larry Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
One of seven siblings, Edna was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Marion, the daughter of Carl and Ethel (Davis) Kelton. She married Richard Carter on June 25, 1961, in Marion, and he survives.
Edna graduated in 1951 from Marion High School. She then attended St. John's School of Nursing in Springfield and received her R.N. license in 1954. She began working as an emergency room nurse at the newly opened Marion Memorial Hospital.
In 1958, Dr. J. Johnson, M.D. of Marion became the company doctor for Olin Matheson Dynamite Plant, and Edna went with him to establish the company clinic at the plant. She stayed to run the clinic, and that is when she met and married Richard Carter of Johnston City.
After they married and Richard graduated from SIU, they began a series of transfers and new jobs at various hospitals in St. Louis, Dallas-Fort Worth and Hurst, Texas.
Edna was blessed with three children.
She was a member of First Baptist Church-Johnston City, Eagles and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also was a lifetime member of VFW Lady Auxiliary.
Survivors include her three children, Gayla Martini of Marion, Tom and wife Tina of Nashville and Tim of Johnston City; five grandchildren, Zack and Cassie Carter and Max, Ryan and Gus Martini; five great-grandchildren, Nick, Caprice, MacKaylei, Marley and Lyric Carter; sister, Dolly Hudgens and husband Carl of Marion; brother, Roy Kelton of Sneeds, Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jesse and Leota Carter; and five siblings, Sam, Bobby Joe, Betty Yost, John (Corkey) and Jim Kelton.
