Robert L. Phillips
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Robert L. Phillips, 85, of Anna, formerly of Elkville, passed away at 12:40 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Robert had worked as a dumper and belt maintenance at Old Ben 24 Coal Mine. He was a member of the Elkville Christian Church. Robert was also a member of the UMW of A Local 1345. He had served as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
He was born Feb. 28, 1927 at Hallidayboro, Ill., the son of Robert C. and Marie (Halstead) Phillips.
He married Juanita O. Jackson on March 7, 1947 at the Elkville Christian Church in Elkville and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Anna, two sons - Michael K. Phillips and wife Diem of Gurly, Ala. and Dennis L. Phillips and wife Vicki of Elkville, two daughters - Teresa A. Phillips of Anna and Susan D. Grigsby and husband Kevin of Anna, one brother - Paul L. Phillips and wife Rose of Du Quoin, two sisters-in-law - Alberta Phillips of Du Quoin and Sonny Phillips of Elkville, three grandchildren - Apen Phillips, Debi Butler and Jessica Grigsby, great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Edward Phillips and Jack Phillips, and one grandson - Byron Phillips.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Bro. Ron Kreid officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Elkville Cemtery at Elkville.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and U.S. Navy.
Friends may make memorials to the Alzheimer's Association or Parkinson's Associaton and will be accepted at the funeral home.
