David I. Johnson of Du Quoin
David I. Johnson, 101, of Du Quoin, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020 at the Illinois Veterans Home of Anna, Illinois.
David worked for 35 years as a salesman for Linkon Auto Supply. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin and was deacon at the church for many years.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, where he participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and the American Defense Service Medal.
He was born May 31, 1919 at Wing, Illinois, the son of Raymon Sr. and Eunice (Bowen) Johnson.
He married Maxine Daily on March 27, 1949 at Du Quoin, Illinois and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1994.
David is survived by his daughter-in-law, Nancy Johnson of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; two grandchildren, Josiah Johnson of Independence, Missouri and Joy Johnson of Cape Girardeau; three great-grandsons, Nathaniel, Zachary and Joshua; and a sister, Irene Meyers of Fairbury, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Paul Johnson; one brother and two sisters.
Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020 at the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin with Rev. Joe Wagner officiating. The eulogy will be given by Kurt Harris and Brian Henderson.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W., Du Quoin American Legion and the Army National Guard.
Everyone in attendance is required to wear a mask and to practice social distancing.
Friends are invited to make memorials to the First Baptist Church Building Fund; these will be accepted at the funeral home.
