Carbondale man charged with murder of mother

A Carbondale man is in jail on charges that he killed his mother earlier this year.

A judge on Monday ordered that William L. Walters, 65, be detained pending his Jan. 7 preliminary hearing on two charges of first-degree murder. Officers had arrested Walters Saturday on a Jackson County arrest warrant.

Officers originally responded March 19 to the 100 block of South Hewitt Street regarding an elderly woman who was unresponsive. First responders attempted life-saving efforts but were unable to revive the woman, Shelby Winfield, 85, a CCHS graduate and local real estate agent.

Police continued to investigate the circumstances leading to Winfield’s death and obtained the arrest warrant Dec. 13.

Walters faces a preliminary hearing on the charges Jan. 7.
