Police see uptick in vehicle burglaries

Vehicle burglaries are on the rise in Carbondale, and police are advising the public to take a few precautions to prevent even more incidents.

The Carbondale Police Department reported last week that since Aug. 1, it has investigated 37 reports of burglaries to motor vehicles in Carbondale. The vast majority of the reports indicated the targeted vehicle was either left unlocked, likely unlocked, or the suspect entered the vehicle without causing visible damage.

“We are seeing an increase in vehicle burglaries where suspects target unlocked vehicles or those with valuables left in plain sight," said Carbondale Police Chief and Interim City Manager Stan Reno. "I urge everyone in Carbondale to take simple, preventive measures, such as locking your doors and removing any visible valuables. By working together, we can reduce these incidents and keep our community safer. If you notice any suspicious activity, like individuals checking car door handles, please contact the Police Department immediately. Your vigilance can make a significant difference.”

The police department recommends the following tips to reduce becoming a victim of a burglary to your vehicle:

• Keep your vehicle doors locked at all times.

• Park your vehicle in a locked garage if possible. If a garage is not available, park where there is plenty of light, potential witnesses, or in the view of any security cameras.

• Keep your windows completely closed so the suspect can’t force the window down allowing the suspect to unlock the door or reach items inside.

• Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle when unattended, especially in plain view.

• Don’t leave the keys or spare keys to the vehicle inside of it.
