Two dead after crash Friday in Steeleville

Two Randolph County residents died Friday, April 22, after the motorcycle they were riding was involved in a crash with a pickup truck in Steeleville.

According to the Illinois State Police, Dakota Morrison, 26, of Chester, the driver of a 2013 Harley-Davidson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Passenger Diane M. (Gonzalez) Gilmer, 31, of Steeleville was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where she died.

State police said the crash occurred around 1 p.m. Friday when Nicholas T. Cook, 34, of Du Quoin was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Broadway Street near James Street.

Morrison and Gilmer were waiting at the stop sign on James Street when the Silverado crossed the westbound lane and struck the motorcycle, police said.

Cook was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours.
