Jerry Wayne Swan of Galatia, formerly of Harrisburg
On Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 11:44 p.m. Jerry Wayne Swan went from this life to everlasting life.
Jerry was 79 years old and seven days shy of his 80th birthday. He resided in Galatia, Illinois, and was born on March 13, 1942, in Harrisburg, Illinois, the son of Margaret and Wayne Swan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Max Swan and grandson Nathan Mullen.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ann Swan; three children, Joe (Terri) Swan, Crystal Swan-Gravatt (Rick) and Dale (Jeannie) Swan; six grandchildren, Natalie Mullen-Leisher (Andrew), Laura McLaughlin (Matthew), Dustin Swan (Jayci), Holly Swan, Austin Swan and Houstin Swan; five great-grandchildren, Tessa Williams, Emma McLaughlin, Ryder Williams, Raylan Swan and Adalyn McLaughlin.
Jerry was a dedicated husband and father. He started working as a car mechanic, and then was a coal miner for 28 years with Sahara Coal and owned his own small engine repair business named Swan's Repair.
He served as a secretary of his local Progressive Mine Workers of America union and also served on the Galatia school board for many years. He attended Tate's Chapel United Methodist Church in Galatia.
His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, arrowhead hunting, storm spotting, gardening, building fishing rods and bird watching. He could do pretty much anything.
Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday March 10, 2022 at the Tate's Chapel Church, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. The Rev. Dave Cochran will officiate with burial in the Tate's Chapel Cemetery.
