Randolph County briefs: Chester Rec Ball signups, SWCD election

Chester Rec Ball signups underway

Registration started Monday for Chester Rec Ball leagues, including wee ball, toddler T-ball, T-ball, baseball and softball.

The earlier you register, the lower the cost. Fees for wee ball are $25 before Feb. 18, $50 Feb. 19-25, $75 Feb. 25-28. Toddler T-ball costs $35 by Feb. 18, $50 Feb. 19-25, $75 Feb. 25-28. T-ball is $45 before Feb. 18, $65 Feb. 19-25, $100 Feb. 25-28. Baseball and softball cost $55 before Feb. 18, $75 Feb. 19-25, $100 Feb. 25-28. All registrations are due by 3 p.m. Registration packets and age ranges are at chesterill.com or City Hall. Volunteer coaches also are needed; annual background checks are required. SWCD election moved to next week, Feb. 8

Due to weather, the Randolph County Soil & Water Conservation District has postponed the Feb. 3 election of directors to Tuesday, Feb. 8. Vote from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the USDA/Office building, 313 W. Belmont, in Sparta. Anyone living within the district's boundaries or owing property is eligible to vote, whether as lessee, renter, tenant or otherwise. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, customers cannot enter the USDA building. Once you arrive, call the office, (618) 443-4381, ext. 3, and a ballot collection box will be held out through the Farm Service Agency window. Voters will be asked to maintain social distancing and wear a mask.

St. Mary relief concert a success

Perryville's EXP Productions raised $5,319 for St. Mary (Missouri) tornado relief at its benefit concert Jan. 15. Organizers thank the musicians and volunteers for donating their time and everyone who attended, plus City Tavern for sponsoring the bar and Perry Park Center for providing the venue. The funds will be presented at the St. Mary board meeting Feb. 10. A fund has been set up through the City of St. Mary, and donations are still being accepted. Elks to host free kids orthopedic clinic

The South District Elks Lodges will sponsor a free children's orthopedic assessment clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Marshall Browning Hospital, 900 N. Washington Street, Du Quoin. Dr. Alan Froehling from Mount Vernon will see patients by appointment only. For appointments, call Illinois Elks Children's Care at (800) 272-0074 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
