Lyle Wesley 'Shorty' Houghland, formerly of Du Quoin
Lyle Wesley "Shorty" Houghland, 85, of Carlinville, Illinois, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:07 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at the Carlinville Area Hospital.
Shorty had been a coal miner at Freeman United Coal Company He was a longtime member of the United Pentecostal Church in Du Quoin and in recent years, a member of the Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Carlinville. Shorty loved to play a variety of instruments and sing unto the Lord. Many were recipients of his kind, generous, and compassionate heart. Shorty was a United States Air Force veteran.
He was born July 17, 1936, at Boyd, Illinois, the son of Milton Alec and Nellie Mae (Harvey) Houghland.
He married Marjorie Alongi on March 26, 1966, at Wolf Lake, Illinois and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Carlinville; six children, Charles (Cindy) Ceto of St. Louis, Steve (Kathy) Houghland of Colorado, Ron Ceto of Murphysboro, Tina (Steve) Evans of Carlinville, Pam Houghland of Colorado and Lisa (Craig) Fritchley of Indiana; nine grandchildren, Colin Ceto, Seth Evans, Ashley Haschemeyer, Andrew and Alayna Fritchley, and Steve Jr., Jillian, Keenan, DeEtta and Christian Houghland; great-grandchildren Carter and Juliet Haschemeyer, and Kaya Houghland; three sisters, Brenda Froese of Belleville, Illinois, Loretta Peak of Centralia, Illinois and Mary Smith of Indiana; and one brother, Dave Graham of Du Quoin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Wrolen.
Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W., American Legion, and the United States Air Force.
Friends are invited to make memorials to the Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Carlinville, and they will be accepted at the funeral home.
