Summer reading program coming to Rick Warren Library
Rick Warren Memorial Public Library urges families to stop by the Elkville library to register your child for Reading Colors Your World summer reading program.
The summer reading program will begin June 1, and over the next two months the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults that encourage and support a love of reading.
"Rick Warren Library has planned a wonderful program for kids to make the library a great place to visit and discover what's available for their enjoyment," said Mary Ann Horstmann, library board president.
Michelle Jeschke of Elkville is coordinating the Reading Colors Your World! summer reading program and has planned activities for each of the nine weeks.
She will also be available from 1 to 4 p.m. every Thursday in the library for kids to stop in at their leisure to check out books, read and do activities.
Themed events include story presentations, individual reading conferences, activities, games and much more. Incentives will be awarded at different levels; for every five books read, your name will go into a drawing for a $25 prize.
The summer reading program will end July 30.
There's also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents reading loss.
"Studies also indicate students who read recreationally outperform those who don't," Horstmann added.
"Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests," she said. "Rick Warren Library Is committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families."
Registration continues through June 10. To learn more about the summer adventure at the library, call (618) 568-1843 or visit the library's Facebook page.
