Small Street/Veterans Drive will be 4-way stop May 24

HARRISBURG - Harrisburg Public Safety Commissioner Raymond Gunning says the intersection of Small Street and Veterans Drive will become a four-way stop beginning Monday, May 24.

It's a matter of public safety, Gunning said.

"Due to the increased traffic flow, and consequently, the increased number of accidents at the intersection, that intersection will become a four-way stop May 24," Gunning said.

Gunning said the brisk business at Thrive, near the northwest corner of the intersection, is part of the reason traffic flow through the intersection has been greater.

In August, Thrive, a cannabis dispensary, donated $10,000 to the city to help pay for upgraded flashing stop signs and additional signage at the intersection. Those stop signs were at the north and south ends of the Veterans Drive intersection.

However, traffic crashes continue at the intersection, and Gunning said the city believes putting a stop sign on both sides of the Small Street portion of the intersection will make the intersection safer.

"We feel it's best to make it a four-way stop for better safety," he said.
