Thomas Herbert George of Du Quoin

Thomas Herbert George, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at the Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Thomas was the store manager for the Mine Service Company. He was a member of the Liberty Church in Du Quoin and enjoyed camping and woodworking.

Thomas was a United States Marine Corps veteran.

He was born Feb. 10, 1936 at Tamaroa, Illinois, the son of Hershel E. and Helen L. (Newborn) George.

He married Mary Kathryn Ray on Oct. 12, 1961 at Du Quoin, Illinois and she survives.

Besides his wife of Du Quoin, Thomas is survived by one daughter, Kristine (David) Harrison of Du Quoin; one son, Thomas W. (Heather) George of Pinckneyville; two sisters, Amanda Macaraeg of Staunton, Illinois and Janice Nowakowski of Las Cruces, New Mexico; nine grandchildren, Charles Alan Payne II (fiancé Morgan Dennis) of Du Quoin, Lauren Elizabeth (Hayden) Hicks of Pinckneyville, Miranda Ray Payne of Du Quoin, Savannah George of Pinckneyville, Megan Fallon of Pinckneyville, Dalton George of Benton, Sydney Geralds of Marissa, Tyler George of Ava and Cierra Fallon of Pinckneyville; and three great-grandchildren, Luca Ray Payne, Leighton Elizabeth Hicks and Kane Geralds.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen "Sis" Russell; and a half-brother, Bob Horner.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the Liberty Church in Du Quoin with the Rev. Lon McPherson officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Everyone in attendance is required to wear a mask and asked to use social distancing guidelines.

Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Du Quoin. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion, and the United States Marine Corps.

Friends may make memorials to the Liberty Church, which are being accepted at the funeral home.
