Edward Herman Powley of Chester

Edward Herman Powley, 94, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020 at Independence Care Center, in Perryville, Missouri.

He was born to the late Alva Everett and Nora (nee Welten) Powley on April 1, 1926 in Pana, Illinois.

Edward married Velma Lee Duensing on June 26, 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester; she preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 1995.

He worked as a stationary engineer at Menard Correctional Center for 18 years. Edward also owned and operated Superior Cleaners with his mother and brother Paul for 30 years.

Edward was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was also a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #3553 and American Legion Post #487 in Chester.

Edward was a former elder and trustee at church. He also served on the Chester Unit District 139 school board, was a member of the Chester Chamber of Commerce and was a chairman of the Chester park board.

He is survived by two children, Butch (Gina) Powley of St. Peters, Missouri and Rick (Lynn) Powley of Chester; two siblings, Carl (Joy) Powley of Springfield, Missouri and Paul (Collette) Powley of Chester; five grandchildren, Tisha Mitchell, Lacey (Curt) Eggemeyer, Aaron (Emily) Powley, Aidan Powley and Kaela Powley; and nine great-grandchildren, Logan, Elyzabeth, Addyson, Brylee, Kinsley, Trentin, Trevin, Atlas and Nyla.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Velma Lee Powley.

The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, with the Rev. Timothy Sims officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Chester.

Visitation will beheld prior to the service, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church.

The church is limited to 50 people inside at one time. Guests are asked to wear masks and to observe social distancing.

Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church or St. John Lutheran School.
