Prep golf: CHS Boys start 2020 golf season 4-1; Lady Jackets begin 2-1

The Chester High School boys golf team has burst out of the gate this fall with a 4-1 record, and victories over Steeleville (2), Red Bud and Zeigler-Royalton.

Their only loss has been to a very good Gibault Catholic team.

The Lady Jackets, meanwhile, are 2-1 on the season despite carrying several rookies.

<h3 class="breakHead">Boys win by 4 over Steeleville: The boys 2020 season opened Aug. 17 at Pyramid Oaks, where the Jackets won by four strokes, 182-186 over the Warriors. Chester's Jarrett James earned low medalist honors with his score of 38, besting Steeleville's Jack Knop by only 1 stroke. Jaden Mott shot 45, Kaden Freytag shot 46, Luke Miller shot 53 and Chance Mott recorded a 54. Knop shot 39 followed by Avery Hamilton (43), Reid Harris (51), Logan Bartens (53), Parks (60) and Connor Haertling (62).</h3>

<h3 class="breakHead">Fall to Gibault in home opener: The CHS boys opened their home season Aug. 18 at the Chester Country Club in a triangular match with Steeleville and Gibault. The Jackets beat the Warriors for the second day, but fell to Gibault by 10 strokes. CHS was led by Jarrett James who shot 35, followed by Jaden Mott (37), Kaden Freytag (44), Luke Miller (46), Chance Mott (48), and Clayton Andrews (48) for a team score of 162. Steeleville improved from the day before, shooting a team score of 171 led by Jack Knop and Avery Hamilton with 39 each. They were followed by Reid Harris and Logan Bartens (47), D. Rickenberg (52) and Connor Haertling (53). Gibault's Alex Sweeney was low medalist with a score of 34, followed by Ryan Kruse (38), Ryan Bollinger (40), Vollmer (40), Ian Bollinger (43), and Chambers (62) for a team score of 152 and the win.</h3>

<h3 class="breakHead">Lady Jackets win triangular match: The Lady Jackets opened at home on Aug. 18 with wins over Steeleville and Gibault to open season 2-0: Chester's Camryn Luthy, a freshman, led all golfers with a score of 41; she was followed by Samantha Eggemeyer and freshman Jazz Merideth who each shot 59. Audrey Medford (60), Lauren Vasquez (66) and Lauren Soellner (70) gave the team the win with 219 strokes.</h3>

Steeleville took second with a team score of 238 strokes led by Renner (54), and Caraway (56), Hinnerch (64) and Barrens (64). Gibault finished third with a team score of 260 led by Almaaz (60), Inhofe (64), Mesch (67) Hargett (69), Switzerland (70), and Phillips (76).

Assistant Coach Paul Zemlyn celebrated the 2-0 start but said the Lady Jackets are young and inexperienced. "They will get better because they work hard in practice and they support each other," he said.

<h3 class="breakHead">Jackets over Red Bud: Chester varsity and JV boys both won at Red Bud North Country Club on Aug. 19. Jarrett James was again low medalist at the dual match, shooting 36 as the varsity boys improved to 3-1 over Red Bud. James was followed by teammates Kaden Freytag (38), Jaden Mott (41), Chance Mott (45), Luke Miller (48) and Clayton Andrews (53) with a team score of 160. Red Bud recorded a team score of 301.</h3>

The JV also won, led by freshman Lucas Thompson who shot 57. He was followed by junior Brock Vasquez (58), sophomore Gage Hasemeyer (59), junior Reed Welborn (62). As a team, the JV recorded a score of 236 strokes for the win.

<h3 class="breakHead">Lady Jackets lose to Z-R: The ladies lost their first match of 2020 to Zeigler-Royalton on Aug. 20. Camryn Luthy led the Lady Jackets with 46 strokes, followed by Samantha Eggemeyer (55), Paige Vasquez (56), Lauren Soellner (59), and Jazz Merideth and Aubrie Medford (68). Chester had a team score of 216. Z-R's Saegerand Young earned low medalist honors with 45 strokes, followed by Addison (49), Anderson (52), Jackson (58) and Pasquin (59) for a team score of 204.</h3>

<h3 class="breakHead">Yellow Jackets beat Z-R: The boys team improved to 4-1 Aug. 20 with a win over Zeigler-Royalton at the Chester Country Club. Jarrett James was low medalist for the third time in four matches, shooting a 32 against the Tornadoes to pace Chester. He was followed by Kaden Freytag (36), Jaden Mott (40), Chance Mott (43), Luke Miller (47), and Clayton Andrews (51) as the Jackets posted a team score of 151 in the victory.</h3>

ZR was paced by Maloney who shot 42, followed by Chwarezinski (48), Cross and Sherwin who both shot 50, Cole (55), and Hawkins (60) for a team score of 190.

"Both Yellow Jacket boys and Lady Jackets have worked hard and really want to win," Zemlyn said. "Both teams have improved since the start of the season two weeks ago. They are a bunch of great young ladies and young men.

Coming up: Lady Jackets host Marissa and Trico on Aug. 25; the Yellow Jackets hit the road Aug. 27-38 for matches against Steeleville and Marissa.
