Public session July 10 on Randolph County multi-hazard plan

The Randolph County Emergency Management Agency will host a virtual public information and strategy session July 10 over an update to the Randolph County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The session will begin at 3 p.m. via internet and telephone.

The MHMP serves as a framework for developing hazard mitigation projects that will reduce the negative impacts of future disasters, like storm shelters, warning sirens, flood walls and fire protection enhancements.

The steering committee, comprised of police, fire, county and municipal officials from across Randolph County, has identified the following hazards that require mitigation strategies: flooding, tornadoes, thunderstorms, high winds, lightning, winter storms, hazardous material spills, ground failure and dam failure.

Then, the SIU staff selected hazards to complete computer modeling using HAZUS-MH, a GIS-based risk mitigation tool developed by FEMA that is capable of predicting the probable financial, human life and safety impacts of specific disasters.

Once the plan is completed the steering committee will submit it to FEMA for approval. Then the approved plan will need to be adopted by the County and all of the jurisdictions in Randolph County.

The update of the 2005 Randolph County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan is being facilitated by James A. Conder of the School of Earth Systems and Sustainability, SIU, and by Linda Tragesser, community and regional planner of Southwestern Illinois Metropolitan and Regional Planning Commission.
