Marion KCs will light up the sky for July 4
MARION - While many local communities and organizations have canceled fireworks shows, the Marion Knights of Columbus will be continuing their 30-year tradition, even if the event is a scaled-down version.
While the KC grounds are usually filled with carnival rides, games, and food vendors accompanied by an entertainment lineup before the fireworks show, this year's celebration will be a two-day event on a smaller scale.
"It's always been their event," said Marion Mayor Mike Absher, who said he is behind the effort.
The celebration will kick off on July 3 with entertainment by Danny and the Dreamers from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. Concessions will be available.
The festivities will continue on July 4 with entertainment by Murphy 500 from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. Concession will also be available.
The fireworks display will take place at dusk on July 4.
"The beautiful thing about fireworks," said Absher, "is that people can sit in their cars and socially distance from a wide area."
Absher said he feels like the event is needed, especially at this time.
"In my mind, especially on Independence Day, at a time when it feels like our country is falling apart, we need to be reminded how great our country has been, is, and can be."
Absher said there is "lots of work to do as a country, but I still believe it's the greatest place on earth."
