For now, Du Quoin softball/baseball seasons to open Monday as scheduled
Unless something changes over the weekend, the Du Quoin High School baseball and softball squads will open the 2020 season at 4:30 p.m. Monday with home games against Benton.
As well, the girls and boys track and field teams will attend their regularly scheduled meets, according to DHS Athletic Director Derek Beard.
"All games will be played as scheduled at this time," Beard said in a statement. Beard is also the DHS boys track and field coach.
He said if there are any changes, they will be announced through the school's social media accounts, and the school messaging system.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of virtually all pro and college sports in the U.S., and the IHSA has ended the championship runs of all high school winter sports. So far, the IHSA has not made a decision on spring sports.
Du Quoin baseball coach Kyle Geiger said he got an IHSA email that at present leaves the decision to practice or play games to each local school.
"So as of now, baseball is still on and we'll play Monday at home against Benton and Tuesday at home against Marion," Geiger said.
The softball team will follow Monday's home game with their first away game of the season on Wednesday at Cobden.
The Lady Indians softball will also host a Round Robin against Marissa and Vienna starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and Indians baseball will play a doubleheader at Herrin Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
The only cancellation has been the boys track and field indoor meet at Charleston on Saturday.
