George Raphael Wood of Harrisburg
George Raphael Wood, 74, of Harrisburg and formerly of Junction, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg after an extended illness.
He was born in Shawneetown on Aug. 29, 1944, the son of the late Kelley E. and Melba L. (Graham) Wood.
George was a member of the first graduating class of Southeastern Illinois College. He then joined the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
After serving his country for three years, he began his career in the banking business on the day that Apollo 11 landed on the moon, July 20, 1969. George Raphael retired as a bank manager in 2010.
George enjoyed dining out, antique shopping and working in the outdoors.
He is survived by his loving family, including friend Bobby Hodson of Harrisburg; two sisters, Mary Frances Skaggs of Shawneetown and Prudence Ann (George) Wilson of Rineyville, Kentucky; one brother, David T. (Phyllis) Wood of Shawneetown; niece Tracie Milligan of Pawley's Island, South Carolina; nephew Troy Milligan of Harrisburg; and several other nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, J. William E. "Bill" Wood and Kelley E. Wood Jr.; and a nephew, Leon Milligan.
Visitation for George will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5 at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 6 with his brother, David T. Wood, officiating the service.
Burial with military rites will follow the service at the Kanady Cemetery near Junction.
