Eleanor Rice Glenn, formerly of Benton
Eleanor Rice Glenn, of Mt. Vernon, died in her home Sept. 30, 2018. She was 77 years old.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Nealy Glenn; her three children and their spouses, Michelle Mote (Keith) of Glen Ellyn, Kristin Pack (Dan) of Lexington, Ky., and Chase Glenn (Colleen) of Charleston, S.C.; her four grandchildren, Erica Mote, Erin Mote, Haydn Haycocks and Gus Haycocks; sister-in-law Maureen Rice; nephew Daniel Rice; and niece Elisabeth Fung.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Rose Rice of Benton; and brother Doug Rice of Benton.
Eleanor was born Aug. 2, 1941, in Benton to Robert and Rose Rice. She graduated from Benton Consolidated High School in 1959 and went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University with a degree in education. She married Nealy Glenn, her high school sweetheart, in 1962. Eleanor was a dedicated Christian who took to heart Jesus' command to "love your neighbor." If someone was in need - whether emotionally, spiritually, or physically - she was there to help and support them. As a longstanding member of Logan Street Baptist Church and then Connexion Church, Eleanor was a committed preschool Sunday school teacher, youth worker, home-bound ministry leader and, until her illness, led small group formation at Connexion. She sincerely believed that the church was to be a welcoming place for everyone and worked to see that vision fulfilled.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Ressler officiating. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Eleanor's life.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association.
