Hilda L. Sanders of Shawneetown
Hilda L. Sanders, 96, of Shawneetown, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
She leaves two sons, William Earl (Sharon) Sanders, Mark Stuart (Debby) Sanders, all of Shawneetown. Hilda has a sister, Laura Josephine (Moye) and husband Jerry Hill of Ormond Beach, Florida.
Also she is survived by one grandson, William John-Rufus (Lauren) Sanders of Equality; three granddaughters, Heather Elizabeth Marie Sanders of Equality, Megan Michelle (Sanders) and husband Trevor Jolly of Harrisburg, and Jessicah Lynnette Sanders of Shawneetown. Hilda was also blessed with four great-granddaughters, Mattie Marie and Meredith Musial Sanders, Hayden Layne and Emmalynn Mae Jolly.
Hilda was born at her family home on Jan. 20, 1922 in the Thicket area of Gallatin County to Wilbur Rufus and Blanche Elizabeth (Glasscock) Moye. She attended three years of high school in Omaha and graduated from Ridgway High School her senior year.
Hilda graduated from Lockyear Business College in Evansville, Indiana, and worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, routing airplanes and supplies for the European Theater during World War II.
Upon returning home she was courted by and married William Newton Sanders on Nov. 17, 1950. William preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1995.
Hilda was a longtime employee of Gold Hill Township, serving as a public case manager in the relief office for over 25 years. She was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Shawneetown for over 58 years and served as church treasurer for over 25 years.
Hilda's priorities in life were family, church, cooking and tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved being outside, and in her later years would sit on her deck to enjoy the weather and her flowers.
Preceding her in death were her husband, William Newton Sanders; her parents, Wilbur Rufus and Blanch Elizabeth (Glasscock) Moye; one sister, Dona Joy (Moye) McArthy; and one brother, Wilbur Lee Moye.
In lieu of flowers donations are asked to be made to the Emmanuel United Methodist Church of Shawneetown, the American Cancer Society, or Residential Hospice.
Visitation for Hilda will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, going until service time at 1 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. The Rev. Cherrie Wilkerson will officiate with burial at Asbury Cemetery near Ridgway.
