Rev. Silas Morgan of Du Quoin

DU QUOIN - Rev. Silas L. Morgan, 79, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:46 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2018 at his residence.

Silas had been owner and operator of S.L. Morgan Excavating. He also worked in maintenance at Marshall Browning Hospital for 19 years.

Silas also had been a Baptist pastor since 1988, serving at several area churches. He was a United States Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of the Ewing First Baptist Church.

Silas was also a member of the Du Quoin Masonic Lodge, Ainad Shriners, Du Quoin American Legion and the Franklin Baptist Association.

He was born May 20, 1939 in Dowell, the son of Silas and Alma Ruth (Graff) Morgan, Jr.

He married Melva L. Lampert on Sept. 8, 1962 in Aurora, and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Melva, of Du Quoin; two sons, Brad (Susan) Morgan of Pinckneyville and Heath (Tracy) Morgan of Maryland; one brother, Gary Morgan, of Du Quoin; three grandchildren, Silas (Sarah) Morgan of Virginia, Cole Morgan of Virginia, and Erica Jo (Weston) White of Nashville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Stike and Addeline Morgan and one on the way in November; and several nieces and nephews.

Silas was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Larry Morgan, Tom Morgan and Steve Morgan; and one sister, Frances Herbert.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Revs. Bert Mitchell and Bill Uhles officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Du Quoin.

Burial will be in the Elkville Cemetery at Elkville.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.

Friends may make memorials to the Shriners Children's Hospital, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
