Joe Buford Singleton of South Pekin
Joe Buford Singleton, 82, of South Pekin, passed away at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
Born Feb. 27, 1936 in Jackson, Tennessee to John and Bettie (Bray) Singleton, he married Margaret Hunt on Sept. 14, 1957 in Corinth, Mississippi. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Sherry (Gordon II) Morris of Pekin; one son, Jerry (Beth) Singleton of South Pekin; four grandchildren, Brandi (Ricky) Clendenny of Manito, Mindi Mitzelfelt and Taylor Singleton, both of South Pekin, and Hannah Singleton of East Peoria; five great-granddaughters, Annelise, Braelynn, Charlotte, Reagan and Ivy; two brothers, Jim (Elaine) Singleton of Loves Park and John (Faye) Singleton of Jackson, Tennessee; and one sister, Sue (Larry) James of Spring Creek, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Belle Glozier and Elizabeth Privett; and four brothers, Roy Singleton, Robert Singleton, Willie Singleton and Carl Singleton.
Joe worked in maintenance for Laidlaw Corporation for eight years in Bartonville and later for 17 years in Monticello, Wisconsin. He retired on June 1, 2000 with 25 years of service. Previously, he had worked for Fabry's Phillips 66 Station in Pekin and Broderick and Bascom Wire Rope Co. in Bartonville.
He had served on the South Pekin Fire Department and South Pekin Civil Defense. He had helped with Little League in South Pekin.
Joe enjoyed fishing, vacationing, sightseeing, and attending baseball games. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to him.
His funeral will begin at noon Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Kim Bacon will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and also from 11:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be at Woodrow Cemetery in rural Pekin.
