Lyman Gene Armes of Chester
It is with great sadness that the family of Lyman Gene Armes announces his sudden passing, on July 24, 2018, at the age of 67 years.
Gene will forever be lovingly remembered by his daughters Alison (Adam) Karp and Emily Roesler, and his beloved grandsons Harvey, Edward, and Charlie. Gene will also be forever remembered by his brother Glenn (Ruth) Armes, and sisters, Nancy Carole Featherly, Darlene Gentsch, and Mary Gayle Jany, and his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, extended family and many friends.
A native and resident of Chester, Illinois, Gene was the son of Laughton Gale and Fleta McKenzie Armes, who preceded him in death.
Gene was a caring, generous, humble man. He had a brilliant intellect and a quick wit. He was quick to laugh and slow to anger. Gene was adored and admired by all who knew him. He went out of his way to make everyone around him comfortable. He always had an ear to listen and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. He was a great storyteller and kept the memory of his ancestors alive and well for the younger generation. Gene knew everything about baseball and was a lifelong Cardinals fan. He meant so much to so many and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Gene was a 32nd degree Mason, Chester Lodge #72, since 1972. He enjoyed genealogy and belonged to the Frankfort Area Genealogical Society, West Frankfort, and the Illinois Sons of the American Revolution, Belleville Chapter.
Gene graduated from the University of Hawaii with a doctorate in Biochemistry and a doctorate in Biophysics. He was Senior Scientist and Director of Quality Control for Abbott Laboratories in Worcester, MA, and was instrumental in the development and approval of several lifesaving drugs, including Humira. With his passing, the world and those who loved him lost a talented and thoughtful man.
A funeral service in memory of Gene will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, with visitation at 1 p.m., at the Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home, 839 Lehman Drive, Chester. A celebration of Gene's life will follow at 4 p.m. at the American Legion, 500 Opdyke Street, Chester.
