William Eugene 'Bill' Smith of Shawneetown

William Eugene "Bill" Smith, 89, of Shawneetown, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 at the Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg.

He was born on July 2, 1928 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, one of eight children of the late Walter and Veronica (Deitz) Smith. Bill married the former Patricia Louise Barger on May 21, 1960.

He worked at several places during his lifetime, including the Carmi Times and Eldorado Daily Journal newspapers, International Tables of Henderson, Kentucky, and his favorite - the Bickett Farms here in Gallatin County.

Bill served for two years in the U.S. Army and then reenlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict era.

He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown and the Shawneetown American Legion Post #585.

Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Patty Smith of Shawneetown; their son, Jerry (Lisa) Smith of Shawneetown; three sisters, Mary Willett of Smithton, Virginia Quinn of Sturgis, Kentucky and Delorse Drone of Tallula; two brothers, George Smith of Sun City West, Arizona and Harold Smith of Old Shawneetown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas Smith; and two brothers, Walter D. Jr. and Andrew Smith.

Visitation for Bill was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2018 at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at the funeral home, with Father Steven Beatty and the Rev. Randy Vaughn officiating. Burial will be at the Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown with military rites.
