Carl Smith of Du Quoin, formerly of Elkville

DU QUOIN - Carl Lee Smith, 86, of Du Quoin, formerly of Elkville, passed away at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the Marion VA Medical Center.

Carl was retired from the Carbondale Postal Service, where he worked as a postal clerk. He was a member of the Liberty Church in Du Quoin. Carl was also a member of the Elkville Senior Center, where he played pool. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Carl enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He was born Nov. 11, 1931 in Cobden, the son of Herbert Lee and Edith (Smith) Smith.

He married Clara Mae Colp on Dec. 30, 1961 and she preceded him in death on May 14, 2015.

He is survived by one daughter, Sheri Rogers and husband, Forrest, of Tamaroa; two sons, Steve Smith and wife, Cheryl, of O'Fallon, Missouri, and Sam Smith and wife, Gina, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; one brother, Dennie Smith of Jonesboro; one sister-in-law, Pat Smith, of Cobden; seven grandchildren, Charity Rogers and Nikki Vowell, Ethan Rogers, Andrew Smith and wife, Jessica, Courtney Smith and fiancé, Matt Sumners, Samantha Hughes, Mikey Hughes, and Christine Hughes; and one great-grandchild, Payton Smith.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Donald Smith, and one sister, Juanita Williams.

The memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, at the Liberty Church in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Lon McPherson presiding.

Visitation will start at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and run until time of service at the church.

Friends may make memorials to Wounded Warriors and will be accepted at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, which is in charge of arrangements.
